1982 was a recession year, and that coupled with nearing the end of the ore hauling season began generating lines of stored SD9s and 18s on the Missabe at Proctor yard. On an especially cold, rainy October day, nine SDs are stored, with another row parked behind them. It was common for the railroad to lease these units to other carriers during winter months.
