Climbing out of downtown Los Angeles, Amtrak train No. 961-30, carrying (at the time) President Joe Boardman and his aides to Modesto, curves to the east on the Redondo Flyover as it crosses the Los Angeles River. The train will soon be racing on the flats to San Bernardino or a brief station stop there before ascending Cajon Pass. From there, the train will bend to the north at Barstow and race across the desert flats to Mojave where it will then ascend Tehachapi Pass before making another station stop at Bakersfield.
