Capturing Union Pacific along the Columbia Gorge is a more difficult task than getting shots of BNSF. The Oregon side is limited by I-84, making stops and turnarounds tough, and foliage west of The Dalles has covered a lot of traditional locations. Although busy, UP can have 3-5 hour windows with no traffic. But it's worth the effort in a BNSF dominated Pacific Northwest, and taking time to find a location can pay off. Plus there is great scenery to simply enjoy. Here a westbound manifest rolls along the river just west of Hood River, viewed from a cliff at Ruthton County Park.
The famed natural aspect of the Pacific Northwest has drawn tourists and railfans alike from all over the world. This photo compilation showcases the sections where rails meet water between Washougal, WA/Troutdale, OR and Plymouth, WA/Boardman, OR.
