Basta History

In June 1974, a trio of SD45s leads a Santa Fe westbound freight across Commonwealth Avenue in Fullerton, California. ATSF SD45 5513 is the former ATSF 1813, built in mid-1966. This location is known as Basta on the Santa Fe, and just beyond the highway crossing is the Union Pacific's Anaheim Branch, which crosses here as well. Tragically, Basta was the site of a fatal accident when, on February 18, 1970, a UP train left their caboose hanging over the ATSF mainline while they switched the Hunt Wesson plant, just to the left in this photo. Joe McMillan posted photos of that wreck HERE and HERE.
