Beginning it's brief journey over the 811-foot long Gaviota trestle, a lengthy northbound Coast Starlight lives up to its namesake on a beautiful day on the west coast. On this bright, sunny afternoon, the train includes two Patrick Henry private cars and an additional two Kansas City Southern business cars on rear. Strangers to the west coast, the two business cars were carrying Mike Haverty, at the time the existing Chairman of the Board of the Kansas City Southern Railroad as he celebrated 50 years of railroading and his own birthday with a vacation trip.
