A westbound Burlington Northern coal train broke a knuckle on the lead car right behind the motive power leaving Keenesburg, Colorado, in April 1984. The coupler of coal gon FTTX No. 2521 shows to have a previous crack in the knuckle indicated by the dark, rusted areas of metal in the break, and the coupler casting itself also seems to be cracked where the nose of the pin is inserted. With the break luckily right behind the power, the crew got a new knuckle off the nearby locomotives, replaced it, and were soon off to Denver.
