When Conrail first decided upon blue and white as its corporate image, quite a few units were painted without the correct lettering, and without the wheel-on-rail “can opener” logo. Outlying shops (non-Juniata) did many of these repaints, and sometimes the units selected for repaint may not have been part of Conrail’s long term plan. While E8A 4022 was fully branded in the corporate image, one other E8 received one of the rogue paint treatments. Assigned to commuter service based in South Amboy, New Jersey, former Penn Central 4356 displays its “blue patched” image at its home terminal.
