Last Day

For 54 years, the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western’s original 1930 MU cars served its suburban electrification. On their first journey they were piloted out of Hoboken by Thomas Edison. Here, they are in their last day of continuous service to countless suburban New Jersey commuters as a train exits the Bergen Hill Tunnels and winds its way into Hoboken Terminal. Trailer 3219 actually predates the electrification by five years, having been built in 1925 by Pullman as a steam-pulled suburban coach. Most of the MU cars escaped rebranding by either of their last two owners, Conrail and New Jersey Transit.
