Remarks & Notes
"I Smell a Skunk!"

I was part of a circle of railfan friends that, while travelling together, had a friendly rivalry to get a better shot than the others in a given situation. It was not unusual after arriving at a location for one or more of us to quietly break from the pack and seek out a different vantage point in the hopes of getting a better shot, thereby “skunking” the rest of the group. If somebody in the group noticed the breakaway member, they would often announce it to the group by saying, “I smell a skunk!” We couldn’t help but notice one of our group as he suddenly appeared on the end of an out-of-service coal conveyor at the Markle mine near McWilliams, Pennsylvania.
