Remarks & Notes
At first glance this is just another M-1 class Budd MU at North White Plains, but the DOT logo on the nose and the vents behind the cab indicate that it is one of the eight prototype dual power gas turbine/electric cars built for the Long Island RR in 1976. The idea was to permit through service from Penn Station on the LIRR's non-electrified branches. That experiment didn't work out, the turbines were removed, and the cars were eventually reassigned by the MTA to former New York Central third rail territory, where this one headed up a Grand Central local.
