Remarks & Notes
SD70-MACs were the premier coal haulers for a number of years on BN/BNSF. Here a lovely pair are motoring into the yard at Alliance, NE with another string of empty coal buckets on an April afternoon. Empties departing Alliance could either run the Angora Sub toward the South Powder River Basin or out the Butte Sub via Crawford for the north end of the Orin Sub or Gillette. BN used to have a train dispatchers' office in Alliance. A couple of the dispatchers with whom I worked at UP had dispatched for BN in Alliance. That was back in the days when one could still be sort of a boomer and go from company to company, by choice or chance. Fuji Velvia.

The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
