Where the Geese Wear Pants

A German narrow gauge 0-4-0T rolls thru the woods of Bavaria...or so one might think! Tucked in the woods near St. Mary's, Pennsylvania is the little-known Bucksgahuda & Western Railroad. A privately-owned 2-foot gauge outfit, the BNWRR is only open to the public two days per year, for Railroader's Day in late August and Shawmut Day on the second Sunday of September.

The name 'Bucksgahuda & Western' is a reference to the German fairy tale 'Bucksgahuda.' If the children didn’t mind their flock of geese and do their chores, the story goes, a giant gander would swoop down and cart them off to another place. In this place, the gander would turn the children into baby geese, still wearing their little boy knickers, who never grow up. This Bucksgahuda is the place where the little trains never grow up, and neither did the people running them (at least at heart).
