In recent years, a large number of passenger dedicated line operation, but the existing DC locomotive traction task still bears a large number of passenger cars, DC locomotive rated power and traction in traction for small, difficult to maintain high speed train marshalling. Therefore, the railway department hopes to use the latest domestic technology to develop 160km/h or even more high-speed AC drive, high-power fast passenger locomotive. Since 2012, Zhuzhou factory developed HXD1D locomotive, Dalian plant developed HXD3D locomotive, and Datong factory developed HXD2D locomotive in 2013. Subsequently, the HXD1D and HXD3D two locomotives were put into production in large quantities, and the HXD2D locomotives of Datong factory were kept in the factory for the time being. The specific reason is unknown.
