Remarks & Notes
GP 4.5?

Although it may not be obvious at first glance, this Norfolk and Western GP9 has outward signs that it has been altered from its factory configuration. The blanked radiator grille and missing fan above the radiator section indicate that the unit is now either re-engined or is a slug. Disjointed information on the internet indicates that N&W GP9’s 903 and 905 were derated to 975 horsepower and classified as GP 4.5. A guess would be that these two received Caterpillar prime movers in Roanoke, but substantiating information is welcome.
