Remarks & Notes
Engineer Mel Baughman mugs for the camera from the cab of Rio Grande EMD SD40T-2 No. 5349 at East Carbon, Utah, on February 5, 2004. Around Helper, these sullied, weary, black locomotives parked over by the enginehouse used on the local were known as “Mel’s Engines.” Mel passed away on November 2, 2017.

The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
