Remarks & Notes |
A three cylinder Class 44 crests a long grade at Blankenheim, East Germany. Another oil-fired Class 44 decapod shoves hard at the rear. Along with the Saalfeld area, the long grade between Sangerhausen and Blankenheim provided the last great mainline steam spectacle in Europe. As late as 1979 a day spent trackside could offer as many as a dozen heavy freights hauled by modernized oil-fired Class 44s. Most east bounds had a second Class 44 pushing. These locos ran uncoupled and cut off at speed where his photo was taken. |
