Glenwood Canyon is a deep gash through the White River Uplift just east of the town of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Interstate 70 and the Union Pacific’s Glenwood Springs Sub follow the Colorado River through the gorge, albeit on opposite sides of the river. The canyon is so deep that the tracks don’t get much sunlight, especially in winter when the sun is low in the sky. I70 has no shoulders, so pulling over to get a shot here is not possible. There are only 3 exits from I70 in the canyon, and these provide the only easily accessible, good photo locations in the canyon. This image is of the BNSF, UKCNWGN0-06, an empty crude oil train bound for Wellington, Utah for a reload. Catching this train here was a bit lucky as it runs very infrequently.
