A Boston & Maine GP9 trio charges through downtown Ayer, MA, with a westbound freight en route to Mechanicville, NY. Three to five unit sets of GP9s and GP18s were the usual road power on the Fitchburg Division mainline at the time. The weedy track was also typical, unfortunately, of a cash-strapped railroad that had fallen into bankruptcy a year earlier.
