Remarks & Notes
CSX used its interchange with the Delaware & Hudson in Buffalo as a major outlet to the northeast and New England. After the D&H was jettisoned by Guilford, the New York, Susquehanna & Western was directed to operate the much larger D&H. Although CSX never bought any B40-8’s directly from General Electric, it financed twenty for the Susquehanna to supplement the four purchased by the Susie-Q, in order to protect its northeast outlet. After the CP took over the D&H a few years later, the NYSW no longer needed the GE’s, and they became the only B40-8’s on the roster until the Conrail breakup. Here one of the twenty leads a southbound D&H train under the Hamilton Street bridge in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
