Switzerland has a new gem of a steamlocomotive! Cogwheel 0-8-0 HG 4/4 # 704 of the Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke, built by SLM Winterthur in 1923 and delivered to Indochina (now Vietnam) for the line from Thap Cham to Da Lat. Brought back to Switzerland in 1990 more or less as scrap. Rebuilt during the last 12 years with about 50000 man hours in the workshops of Chur and Uzwil. The 4 cylinder compound locomotive with separate cogwheel and adhesion drives is going up the 11.0 # grade of the Abt cogwheel system near Realp. The head of the project, Jakob Knöpfel, checks the correct operation of the two drives (running in different direction!) from the cab access.
