Remarks & Notes
The Oneida & Western was a railroad without track. Due to the Louisville & Nashville’s inability to supply sufficient empty cars and power, the Shamrock Coal Company bought its own cars and SD40-2’a, and resurrected the name of a long-defunct short line. L&N crews operated the trains, and I believe that the L&N also maintained the equipment. Here one of the SD40-2’s rests in the L&N engine facility in Corbin, Kentucky.

The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
