Springtime Surfliner: Pacific Surfliner train 774 zooms past a field in Carlsbad, California on its way to San Diego. Winter may be just over a month longer, but there are already signs of spring on the approach as green shrubs begin to appear. The train is being pulled by locomotive number 458. This is the last F59PHI still in service on Pacific Surfliner trains and one of only two that are still on the west coast. Not too long from now, this locomotive will be headed east to begin a new life in Chicago pulling Metra commuter trains.

Some of the best passenger locomotives that EMD ever made (aside from the F40PH). With all Amtrak F59s gone from the Surfline, the only place that they can be seen is with Caltrans (Amtrak California).
