There are few freight cars that are more distinctive than the B&O’s “wagontop” box cars. Conceived out of the necessity to replace older double-sheathed boxcars with steel ones, the class M15K wagontops, were constructed at Mount Clare with new fabricated steel bodies on the older double-sheathed cars’ underframes. Although I remember seeing them in trains as a kid, the wagontops had pretty much disappeared from revenue service before my photography days. Here is former B&O 375311, white-lined and in storage service, sits within the Cumberland shops complex.
