Remarks & Notes
Racing home against the impending snow storm, 1923 vintage, American Locomotive Company built No.476 of the Durango and Silverton heads back to the roundhouse. The locomotive and trailing flanger were called out to clear the line for the next day’s passenger train, but during the trip, those trains were canceled due to the upcoming storm. The daily trains were canceled as a precaution to heavy snow that could have possibly triggered snow slides in the Animas Canyon. Out of the storm, Purgatory Ski Resort, which sits atop the canyon, received 46” of snow in the storm.
