Remarks & Notes

As cold weather sets in the rail on the railroads will go thru some strain. As the steel cools with winter temperatures, it contracts. That means any points that are weak will break or pull apart. Here the CP crew is working on a pull apart on the Ottumwa Hill. The crew had to light some ropes that are placed on both sides of the break. With the heat and some taps on the rail, the rail will expand, and move to allow this crew to put the joint back together. Common practice that will go on for many railroads, many times, over the winter months. Thanks to the friendly CP crew tolerated the drone work.
