Remarks & Notes
With the cylinder cock wide open on this brisk spring morning the 115 year old Alco built 2-8-0 SR 630 work it's way east out of East Chattanooga on the head of the Missionary Ridge Local bound for Grand Junction to pick up the passengers for the 10:40 am round trip. The excursion is running on the foot print of the original Southern Railway's Georgia Division. Due to height clearance from the 1858 built Missionary Ridge Tunnel the Southern Railway built a double track main which by-pass the foot hills of Missionary Ridge, which resulted in the abandonment of the three-mile section of right of way. Today the right of way is own by the Tennessee Valley Railroad, and seeing trains through this right of way has been a common sight since is re-open in 1970.
