With a bit of indulgence for its first on-the-fly night photo, Union Pacific Railroad's 4-8-8-4 #4014, affectionately chalked on May 3, 2019, as the "Big Boy" on the front of the locomotive by Ed Dickens, produces some smoke as the throttle is opened leaving Speer, Wyoming. This is the Big Boy's first trip out of the yard and would terminate at Nunn, Colorado a short time later to return to Cheyenne, Wyoming for another round of Friday testing. A total of 4 Alien Bees B1600s were used for this scene with Nikon D810 at ISO 400 and 1/250 at f5.6.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
