Leaving Lamy. One of the great ironies of railroad history involves the Santa Fe. Arguably the most recognizable railroad company name, the "Santa Fe" originally bypassed the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Due to rugged mountainous terrain, it was impractical to route the AT&SF mainline through the city. Instead, the Santa Fe created "Lamy, New Mexico". Located 18 miles from Santa Fe, Lamy became the connection point between the Santa Fe Railroad and the City of Santa Fe. Today, Lamy is home to just over 200 residents. Amtrak's Southwest Chief still makes a daily stop here, allowing passengers to make a quick bus connection into the city. In this shot, a late #3 highballs Lamy, passing several US&S searchlight signals.
