The great expanse of the San Luis Valley surrounds a tiny Rio Grande local freight headed from Alamosa to Antonito at Estrella, Colorado, on the morning of May 24, 1991. Even though it doesn’t look like it in this view, irrigated agriculture and ranching abounds in this valley that is the headwaters of the Rio Grande River in south central Colorado.
