The IHB Unicorn. Indiana Harbor Belt 4010 does its best to blend in with the rest of the standard cabs at the IHB yard in Blue Island, Illinois, but is a unique unit. Built as Southern Pacific 3197 (GP40P-2, 11/74), it is living its later life as a freight unit after its initial assignment in commuter service in California. A total of 16 "passenger geeps" of the GP40P/P-2 variants were built new by EMD, designated "P" for having steam generators for passenger cars and "-2" for updated technology. The other 2 GP40P-2s hide in armour yellow in freight service for Union Pacific. The original 13 GP40Ps live on for New Jersey Transit in commuter or work service as rebuilt GP40PH-2s after being purchased in 1968 by the state for use by the Central Of New Jersey Railroad.
Not
just heritage schemes, not just commemorative schemes - this album is devoted to some of the world's most interesting paint schemes, past or present.
