Now Longer And Stronger. Just over a year ago today on May 25, 2020, the Amtrak Lake Shore Limited was down to just 4 cars (coach+diner/sleeper lounge+sleeper+baggage) between Albany-Rensselaer, New York and New York Penn Station, as P32AC-DM 702 leads this shortened consist down the Hudson River near Manitou, New York. By October of 2020, service frequency was reduced to tri-weekly between New York, New York/Boston, Massachusetts and Chicago, Illinois due to COVID-19 related reduced ridership. On May 31, 2021, Amtrak will restore daily service on this and 3 other long distance routes, the mid-point of a 3 week process of restoring daily service on the 12 routes that saw their service frequency reduced (The Auto Train has remained daily, the Sunset Limited and Cardinal will remain tri-weekly as they have for many years).
