An eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight rolls eastward through East Kiewit, Wyoming, on September 13, 1999. The area north of Sheridan is rich with coal mining history, but one-by-one, the underground mines closed. In later years, a flood loader silo was built in 1966-67 to ship coal from the Acme mine, which became an open pit operation. Eventually the mine closed and shortly after this photo, the silo in the background was demolished.
