In actuality, lead unit No. 56 is Anthracite Railroads Historical Society's EMD F3 built in May 1948 for the Bangor & Aroostook RR as #506A. Sister unit, No. 57 was built the same year as Bangor & Aroostook No. 504A and is owned by the Tri-State Railroad Historical Society. Both ran excursions sporadically through the Lehigh Gorge, until being moved to Steamtown in 2009, where they were completely restored and repainted to represent the Lackawanna Railroad. Mauch Chunk was founded in 1818, taking the name "Jim Thorpe" in 1954 when the cross-river boroughs of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk merged. The town is named after renowned athlete and Olympic medal winner Jim Thorpe.
