Remarks & Notes
Once out of Manhattan, quite a few of the New York City subway system lines are above ground for part of their journeys. Brooklyn’s Smith-9th Streets Station, serving both the F and G Lines, is very much above ground – 87½-feet (26.7 m) above the ground, in fact, in order to clear the Gowanus Canal. The station also has a spectacular view of southern Manhattan across the East River. An outbound MTA F Train, consisting of Alstom/Kawasaki R160 cars (with NYCT 9397 leading), enters the station, much of which, as seen on the right, is constructed of through girder bridges – an impressive sight in itself.
