Remarks & Notes
The name "Georgia & Florida Railroad" dates back to 1906 and has since gone thru numerous name & territory modifications, as well as operators. The current OmniTRAX Georgia & Florida Railway variant has a very long history, dating back to the late 1800's. A lot to cover, this portion of the line is where the original Georgia Southern Railway extension from Quitman, GA terminated. The line south of the diamond is part of a 26-mile extension to Perry, FL. In more recent times, Norfolk Southern controlled the operations until 1995 when Gulf & Ohio took over several old branch lines in the region, but also had CSXT sharing duties to the Georgia-Pacific plant at Foley, south of Perry. As of today, GFRR exclusively operates to/from Foley four days a week, alternating daytime runs in the fall/winter with nighttime runs spring/summer. Present interchange patterns with CSXT (where the train runs as Z409) have the trains originating in Quitman, home to the original general offices of South Georgia Railway.
