Great Northern City.
Great Northern class 717 Desiro City train no. 014 (Siemens, 2018) is seen arriving at Old Street station on the Northern City Line. The line was built by the Great Northern & City Railway, with the purpose of allowing Great Northern trains to access the City of London - real creative with the name, there! The line was built similar to tube standards, albeit with a wider tunnel diameter capable of fitting mainline trains. The Great Northern backed out of the plan, and the line was instead run as a short Underground line. The line was also part of the ill-fated Northern Heights plan, which would have significantly expanded the Northern Line to Bushey Heath, High Barnet, and Alexandra Palace. Ultimately the line was connected to the East Coast Main Line as originally intended, and now runs mainline services from Moorgate to points north.
