Shop Move. On June 19, 2023, a lengthy cut of R42s were transported on the D/West End Line to Coney Island Yard. The New York City Subway maintains over two dozen yards for storage of its equipment across the four boroughs, but the majority of heavy mechanical work is performed either at Coney Island or 207 Street Shops. As seen from the 18th Avenue Station in Brooklyn, New York with the Freedom Tower in the background, these out of service cars are being transported with a locomotive at each end for safety and a “rider car” in between the leading power set to distribute the weight on the elevated structure. The MTA NYCT Subway rosters almost 90 diesel engines to move work trains and out of service cars amongst other tasks, as well as 18 R-127/134 third rail motors (supplemented by R-62As in the summer months) and a number of cars from the R-33S and R-42 class that have been retired from revenue service but operate on “garbage trains” to collect refuse from across the system.
