Trains Of Some Colors. Out for a training assignment on Friday, June 30, 2023, a 6-car set of MTA NYCT Subway/Transit Museum A Division/IRT SMEEs are seen returning to East 180 Street in the Bronx, New York for layup. While modern subway cars are mostly unpainted stainless steel, for decades the MTA prided itself on displaying bright colors and schemes, leading to the moniker “Train of Many Colors” for this portion of the museum fleet roster. The leading set (9207/9206 Blue-And-Silver “Platinum Mist”, R-33) displays the “corporate MTA” scheme of the 1970s, the middle (9017/9016 "Tartar Red”, R-33) the as delivered colors for the Mainline R-33s, and the final and most familiar to modern riders (9587/9586 “Gunn Red” Redbirds, R-36WF) was the color chosen during the administration of then NYCT Subway President David Gunn for the post overhaul IRT fleet and lasted until the delivery of New Technology Trains (R142s). Some these cars were part of the 2022 Transit Museum Holiday Train, with additional pairs each painted in Kale Green “Green Machines” and “Robin's Egg” (Worlds Fair).
