Subway Surf Safari. On June 16, 2023, R-46 5956 (Pullman-Standard, 1975-78) was approaching the Beach 90 St-Holland station when it passed by the tropical waterfront decor of the Rockaway Beach Surf Club in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. This trackage was part of the Long Island Rail Road from its construction until the MTA NYCT Subway assumed operations in 1956. Like all neighborhoods in New York City, the Rockaways are very diverse in culture, but maintain a strong “beach” identity because of the proximity to Jamaica Bay, though the “surf club” is a actually a slightly inland taco restaurant and bar. To accommodate the higher ridership on summer weekends, the MTA operates eight-car shuttle sets from Rockaway Boulevard to Beach 116 Street on this line instead of the standard four-car sets that terminate at Broad Channel.
