Remarks & Notes
The New Jersey High-Speed Rail Improvement program was moving along in late 2011, as seen in this scene at Princeton Junction in West Windsor, NJ. The program's scope includes installation of new signal power cables, new catenary (overhead wire) supports and wire renewal, installation of high-speed turnouts, and renewed power substations. In this scene, one of the westbound tracks has been closed to facilitate the installation of overhead catenary wires and constant tension supports. The temporary platforms allow passengers to cross over the closed track and board trains on the inside express track. Once completed in 2024, speeds between South Brunswick, NJ and Trenton will increase from 135 mph up to 150 miles per hour. Work between New Brunswick and South Brunswick, started in late 2011 was completed in June of 2022 and Amtrak's Acela is currently running at 150 mph on that stretch. The Acela II, or "Avelia Liberty" as it is known, will be able to run these segments at 160 mph.
