P42 At Pelham Draw. An unusual scene was set on Thursday, November 9, 2023 when Amtrak Train 171 was led by AMTK 124 (P42DC) from Boston, Massachusetts to Washington DC. A spot of sun appeared in the afternoon when the train passed over the the Pelham Bay Railroad Bridge in the Bronx, New York on an otherwise cloudy day, catching the train as it passed by some vintage signals under New Have Railroad style catenary gantries. Construction is underway for the expansion of the infrastructure to increase capacity for the addition of MTA Metro-North Railroad trains under the "Penn Station Access" program. Typical all Amtrak trains through this area are either Acela Trainsets or led by Siemens ACS-64 motors, but on occasion a diesel will make an appearance, leading to a "turn on the vents in Penn" reminder to keep the exhaust out of the station.
The Northeast Corridor cuts through four New York counties on its brief stretch to the Connecticut Line east of Port Chester. There are several photo opportunities along the route.
