Remarks & Notes
Built by N&W's Roanoke Shops in 1943, the 1218 is the only surviving example of the railroad's A Class steam locomotives. She is pulling an eastbound 20th Century Railroad Club special toward Ft. Wayne on the ex-Nickel Plate line, a year before retirement from the Norfolk Southern steam program. The 1218 is preserved at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
