| Perhaps the most handsome 4-4-0 ever built. SECR No. 737 on display at The National Railway Museum, York.
The Wainwright D class was a 4-4-0 express loco design built in 1901. There were fifty-one of the class built. Because of their robust construction, they survived well into the 1950s. These locomotives were also known as the "Coppertops" and acknowledged as some of the most elegantly finished trains in the country. The engines were styled and finished to create a favourable impression with the public as the railway was rather low in the public's estimation at that time. Few other railways went so far in adorning their locomotives.
