Remarks & Notes
One of two tunnels on the "Kanawha & West" railroad. This line was originally owned by the Kanawha & West railroad before being taken over by the New York Central in later years. Infact, a small NYC depot (an old NYC lettered wooden boxcar) used to sit just 50 feet behind the location of this photo. It was used for a shelter for children while they would wait for their train to arrive, which would transport them to and from school each day. In later years, Penn Central took over, and eventually as did Conrail, who used the line rather briefly, as it was abandoned in the late 1980's or early 1990's. Although, there is light at the end of the tunnel (no pun intended). NS and the CBC&S RR (a newly formed rail line referred to as Charleston Blue Creek & Sanderson) have full intentions of repairing the line in hopes to transport coal to and from a mine located in Sanderson, just three miles from the location of this tunnel. The line as is stands in November of 2009 will need numerous repairs. The ROW is falling part, there are many bridges and tunnels (such as this one), that will need numerous repairs. Thanks to Ron Stafford for the correction on the history of this line.
