The Reading's Newtown branch, once a proposed main to NYC from Philadelphia, was built in 1878 as part of the Philadelphia and Newtown Railroad (later renamed the Philadelphia, Newtown and New York Railroad). It is now known as SEPTA's R8 line and lies dormant though there have been several attempts to reactivate the line which terminates in Newtown, PA having never reached NYC.
