This Trenitalia northbound passenger train is slowing down as it approaches the station in Monterosso. Of the five cities in the Cinque Terre, only this northernmost village enjoys the luxury of beachfront property, the others being precariously perched on the cliffs along the Ligurian coastline. This train operates between Rome and Genoa; the line originally being completed in 1874. Included in the 27 mile stretch from Levanto to La Spezia, 51 tunnels and 23 bridges were built. Because of the difficult topography of the area and the harsh conditions encountered during construction, the line had been built as a single track. Duplication was completed in 1971 with the opening of the last section between Framura and Monterosso, which included the new Levanto station.
