Continuing in traditions initiated over the decades by the Central Pacific and later Southern Pacific, snow fighting is simply a way of life during inclement months on the Roseville Subdivision. Following several storms which brought several additional inches of 'Sierra Cement' to Union Pacific's Donner crossing the call came for the spreaders. Running in tandem out of Truckee, home base for the snow fighters, the spreaders work their way over the mountain with the lead spreader shoving snow off the #2 track and onto the #1, followed closely by the second spreader, which shoves snow off the #1 track and off to the side. Powered by a pair of former Southern Pacific snow service GP38-2s, SPMW 4030 is working west as the 'second spreader' clearing snow off the #1 track. As the crew of seasoned Donner snow fighters carefully bring the spreader set across Lower Cascade Trestle, the build up of Sierra Cement is swept into the ravine, insuring a clear passage for revenue to once again flow over the Donner grade.
