Remarks & Notes
This is not a photo from a tourist line or a railfan event. This is the Chestnut Ridge Railway track gang’s everyday motorcar. Mack Trucks, Inc., built this model AB railbus in 1922, and it was purchased by the Chestnut Ridge to provide passenger service between Palmerton and Kunkletown, by way of Little Gap and Aquashicola. When passenger service was discontinued in 1935, #51 lingered on the roster, eventually being placed in MOW service. Here, the 57-year-old railbus waits in the track connecting to the former CNJ yard while the crew makes some track adjustments. The Mack was kept in its own shed on the east west end of Palmerton, and also had its own small turntable. The railbus and the turntable were acquired by the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the NRHS in 1986.
