"40 Years Later, Conrail Still Lives in the Bronx" The Consolidated Rail Corporation, known to all of us as Conrail, was the Primary Class I railroad in the northeast created by the government in from 9 bankrupt railroads. Operations began 40 years ago from today, April 1st 1976 and ceased June 1st, 1999 when the railroad was split between Norfolk Southern and CSX. One of Conrail's cabooses still wears the famous blue scheme and is used as a shoving platform on CSX's Hunts Point Market Branch on a daily bases to this day.
