Remarks & Notes
Consecutively numbered E8’s thread their way through the engine terminal leads at South Amboy, New Jersey. While noted for being the home of the last operating GG1’s, the non-electrified territory south of South Amboy was known by railfans for decades as the place where outmoded passenger locomotives were sent to run out their last miles. By the mid-1970’s E7’s had given way to E8’s. Before the E7’s, the PRR banished their Alco PA’s and Baldwin passenger sharks to the New York & Long Branch, succeeding classic K4s Pacifics that had made their last stand along the Jersey shore. Here the first unit is in former owner Penn Central’s paint, while the trailing E8 is painted for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
